I recently acquired a small booklet called simply “Darts” by Noel L Williamson published back in 1968. As far as I'm aware the book is no longer in publication, but if you can obtain a copy is well worth a read.
It certainly amazing how things have changed in 40 odd years.
I was reading a section of the book on the use of the world individual championship of England and Wales.
“ it is a general rule in most clubs and public house matches that the game of 501 be started and finished on a double, although, in the use of the world individual championship of England and Wales completed for annually by players resident in these two countries, a straight start is allowed. Contestants must, how ever, finish on a double, or the bull.
A set of silver darts is awarded for the best performance in each round of this contest from the commencement of house games. This award goes to the player who finishes in the least number of darts, and should there be a pie or a number of players with similar performances, the decision is based upon the superiority of the finish. Such awards continue until the end of the area finals, and there are awards of special prizes for all area divisional and grand finalist. The winner and runner up in the grand finals both received a cup and all finalist, cut-glass 10 tankards. Apart from the other prizes in the area finals, each of these finalists receives a set of views of the world darts. The house or club of the winners of the grand finals and divisional finals will hold the respective perpetual challenge cups a period of 12 months. The certificate is presented to all house champions. There is no restrictions as regards to the number of players who may enter, and there is no entrance fee. No player may, however, sign and reforms in more than one house or club. Transfers are not allowed.”
Times have certainly changed.
